Australian politics live: WA to modify border quarantine regulations on 8 December – as it happened | Australia information

Labor will oppose the Morrison Government’s National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Avoidance legislation in the Senate, pursuing a selection taken by the Caucus these days.

When the Authorities launched the legislation for a Nationwide Commissioner, Labor were being sceptical it was not “bigger and better than a Royal Commission” as the Govt claimed.

We supported referring it to a Senate Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Legislation Committee inquiry so it could be completely examined, and so veterans and households could have their say.

The inquiry claimed again yesterday. It confirmed Labor’s, and a lot of people’s issues, that the Countrywide Commissioner won’t have the independence, scope or methods to talk to the seriously tricky concerns only a Royal Fee can.

The too much to handle responses from submitters and witnesses to the inquiry was that the scope of the function was too slender and that interim Countrywide Commissioner Dr Bernadette Boss was not sufficiently impartial specified her lengthy affiliation with the Australian Defence Drive.

A number of stakeholders have said we want a right inquiry through a Royal Commission to get to the base of systemic troubles and to suggest sensible answers, which could involve a system like the Nationwide Commissioner.
